Introduction 1- It is widely acknowledged that university campus life can be a stressful and challenging period for many students. (Citation) In addition to having to cope with intense academic pressure, many students find themselves having to deal with the stressful tasks of separation and individuation a sense of achieving a separate sense of individuality from their family as well romantic and interpersonal relationships with people from different racial and cultural backgrounds,.. 2- DSM-5 (diag ) PTSD (definition.. ) The DSM-5 (diag )criteria required for the diagnosis of traumatic stress, and the more severe PTSD (definition )symptoms in patients include exposure to a traumatic stressor and intrusion symptoms persistent re-experiencing of the traumatic event manifested through aversive upsetting memories, nightmares, flashbacks, emotional distress when exposed to a traumatic reminder, and physical reactivity following an exposure to the traumatic reminders (APA, 2013, p. 271; Pai et al., 2017). Research Questions The study will be directed by the following primary research question: What is the impact parental involvement on university student COVID-19 pandemic-related trauma recovery and academic performance over the course of campus? To answer the primary research questions, the study to address the following related secondary sub-questions: 1. How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected university students mental health and trauma at a local university in the state of Texas?..(What Are Undergraduate students perceptions of how the COVID-19 pandemic affected university students mental health and trauma?) 2. How does students perceptions of parents response to their university offsprings COVID-19 pandemic-related trauma affect the students trauma recovery experience?(students perceptions of parents response ?) 4. (Removed this questions) 5. (Removed this questions ) Theoretical/Conceptual Framework ( 5 to 10 pages ) The study will be guided by theoretical/conceptual frameworks on two fronts. The first will be the theories that will be used in explaining and understanding the concepts and phenomena of parental involvement, COVID-19 pre/peri/post-traumatic stress symptoms and disorder, and student academic achievement. The second will be the theoretical or philosophical paradigm that will guide the design of the study in terms of methodological approach, research design and methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation.. Pragmatism ( save for latter ) removed part Assumptions (Qualitative research, focus groups ) The researcher holds the following assumptions: Parents are very significant social support systems in the lives of their offspring attending university and the way they handle situations and interact University students perception of parental involvement influences their emotional and psychological wellbeing Traditional college students manifesting with COVID-19-related trauma are in their emerging adulthood stage and are the most appropriate respondents for the study Participants responses will be honest, factual and unbiased. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be used to collect data, reflecting a mixed methods research. Qualitative data collection will involve interviews while quantitative data collection will involve a survey questionnaire The interview schedule and survey questionnaire instruments administered will be fully understood by the research participants in terms of the questions asked, and will elicit reliable responses. (focus groups) Definitions of Terms 1 Epidemic : 2 18-25 AS DEFINED By : Epidemic : Parent: The term parent in this study is used to refer to a university students biological father, biological mother, step-parents, adoptive parent or guardians who act as parents to the student (Coburn & Treeger, 2016). Parental involvement: Engagement and participation of parents in regular, two-way, meaningful communication and support involving parent-student-institution relationships (Sax & Wartman, 2010). Post-traumatic stress (PSS): An adaptive response, considered common and normal, to experiencing an event that caused stress or trauma. A fight-or-flight response that prepares a persons body to deal with a perceived or experienced threat or challenge (McNab, 2020). After the stressful or traumatizing event, the individual avoids or is leery of experiencing that event again, may have nightmares about it, or may feel nervous in a situation that reminds them of the traumatizing event (Huremovi?, 2019a). Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): PTSD is a clinically-diagnosed mental health illness or condition. PTSD differs from PSS by the duration and intensity of symptoms. PTS is momentarily intense while PTSD lasts beyond month, is more severe, and interferes with the persons daily functioning. In PTSD, the person relives the traumatic event through nightmares and flashbacks, and has constant negative thoughts or emotions about the event, tries to avoid situations, activities or people that remind them of the event, and constantly feel nervous, anxious, or edgy (APA, 2013, p. 271; Pai et al., 2017). Resilience: The process of positive adaptation to epidemics, pandemics or other adversity. Arises through social and/or cultural interactions between individuals and their environments (Quintiliani et al., 2021). Traditional and non-traditional college students: Post-secondary undergraduate students between above 18 and under 25 years old who enroll directly in campus from high school (Furedi, 2016; Morris, 2018b). Nontraditional college students are those typically above 25 years who delayed enrollment into postsecondary education (Morris, 2018b). 18-25 AS DEFINED By : Trauma recovery: Refers to the empowerment and restoration of safety in an individual such that they have an ability to live with the event or outcome without being overwhelmed by the emotional or psychological feelings associated with it (Abdalla et al., 2021). Trauma: is one possible outcome of exposure to adversity. Trauma occurs when a person perceives an event or set of circumstances as extremely frightening, harmful, or threateningeither emotionally, physically, or both.
