Write a 5-paragraph essay that analyzes Doreen Massey′s article Geography Matters in a Globalized World in light of what we have been learning in our class this semester. Your goal in the essay is to think critically about geography and globalization, and explain the connections between our course/textbook and Massey′s article. Paragraph 1: You should clearly state what Massey′s argument is in her article in your first paragraph (what is she trying to convince readers of). Introduce your essay: establish the ideas you′ll be discussing. Paragraph 2: How does Massey′s discussion of globalization relate/fit in to her argument? What is Massey′s understanding of globalization? Paragraph 3: Compare Massey′s discussion of globalization to our textbook′s discussion of this concept in Chapter 1. What are the similarities evident around the impacts of globalization from both Massey (1999) and Price et al. (2020, authors of our textbook)? Keep in mind Massey wrote this article in the late 1990s and our textbook was published this year. In the timeline of globalization we have explored in our class, try to think critically about Massey′s focus and statements on globalization at that point in time. How does our textbook update us on the trends of globalization since Massey wrote her article? Paragraph 4: According to our book (Chapter 1, where they explain the common perspectives on globalization), how do you think the authors would classify Massey′s viewpoint/perspective on globalization? Provide evidence from both sources. Paragraph 5: Wrap up your conclusions as to how Massey′s article relates to our textbook, and indeed, how it relates to the discipline of geography you′ve been studying all semester. Formatting and Style Details: Your essay should be written up in a Microsoft Word document uploaded to this Blackboard Assignment portal. Your first page should have single spaced in the top left corner, each on its own line: your name, GEO-100-80 Fall 2020, and the title Response Paper: Geography Matters in a Globalized World. Then on the next line begin double spacing and start your first sentence of your essay. All essays should be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced. Organize your writing into paragraphs delineated with indentation (hit the enter key once and the tab key once to start a new paragraph). Total page length should be between 2-3 pages. When referring to any author use their last name, ie. Massey (1999) discusses… For our textbook you can refer to the authors as Price et al. (et al.=and others, there are 4 authors to our book), ie. Price et al. (2020) write that…. Use parenthetical citation for referencing any quotes incorporate, like so ″Geography matters today more than ever″ (Massey 1999) or ″Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places″ (Price et al. 2020). Be sure you always put your period to end your sentences after the parenthetical reference–it is part of the sentence. Do not use any other sources in this assignment. You will notice Massey, who is British, follows British spelling conventions, for example ″labour″ instead of labor and ″globalisation″ instead of globalization–you can write following American spelling conventions. Tips for Approaching this Assignment: Reading the first three sections of Chapter 1 from our textbook is essential. Start there. Think through what geography means. Think through what was said about globalization. This helps you make sense of what Massey was writing about. Attached to this assignment is a copy of Massey′s article with my highlighting. This just helps you a little bit to focus on the key parts of this essay. If you struggled to understand Massey′s article the first time around, read those parts of Chapter 1 from our textbook first, then read this version of Massey′s piece with the highlighting and see if you can make better sense of it. Always write in your own words. You cannot simply re-state or paraphrase snippets from either sources for a successful paper. You must present your own original thought on the connections between these pieces. Repeating sentences from either source alone cannot do that, only your original thought can make those connections. Whenever you do use words or phrases directly from either source you must put quotation marks around anything that is taken word-for-word. Aim to use direct quotes very sparingly, and rather to explain things in your own words/understanding.
