Chapter Review Chapter 27
Theory of Bureaucratic Caring
Sherrilyn Coffman presents us with the following quote from an interview:
“Improved patient safety, infection control, reduction in medication errors, and overall
quality of care in complex bureaucratic health care systems cannot occur without
knowledge and understanding of spiritual-ethical caring, compassion and right action
for all patients and professionals” (M. Ray, personal communication, April 13, 2008).
Literature Overview of the Theory
Smith and Parker (2015) states, it is a discussion of contemporary nursing culture and shares theoretical view in nursing and those that correspond to the authors theoretical vision and development of professional nursing. The theory of bureaucratic caring is discussed first as a grounded theory (substantive and formal), then as a biological theory. It integrates the relevance of the theory in administrative and clinical practice (p. 462).

Chapter Review Chapter 28
Literature Overview of the Theory
According to Smith and Parker (2015), an overview of the theory Troutman-Jordan’s Theory of Successful Aging addresses successful aging or its accomplishment. Practical guidelines are provided for the promotion of successful aging. The impetus for developing the theory of successful aging was enhanced understanding of successful again, capture from the older adult’s perspective and identification of foci for intervention to foster aging. An emphasis was to improve health, function, and quality of life of the older adult.
Aging is a progressive process
Aging may be successful or unsuccessful
Successful aging is influenced by choices
The self is not ageless
Aging people experience changes that may change their perspectives (pp. 483-484).

The geriatric population is living longer. There are advances in healthcare. Successful again correlates with the extended life span that many baby boomers are experiencing.
