Assignment 2: Short review
Choose a tv show, film, image, map, and critically review it from a cultural geography
perspective (within your chosen theme below)
Themes to choose from:
1. Capitalism
2. Gender
3. Cultures of Natures (either Extractivism, Resistance & Conservation – or an overlap of these)
Maximum word limit: 1,250 (including references)
Further guidelines for the assignment
Don’t just summarise the piece you are focusing on, but rather engage with its content with reference to the materials we have covered so far in the course
Also draw concepts from pre-study break e.g. dimensions of power
Engage critically, drawing on previous course materials (there is a specific slide on maps and other materials in the Week 7 Tuesday’s slides on Moodle and Week 8 Monday’s slides). The points below from Anderson (2021) are good guidelines to follow for thinking and then writing critically, which is important for this assignment.
1. How, why and for whom has the text been constructed?
2. What codes, values, dispositions, habits, stereotypes, and associations does it draw upon?
3. What kind of personal and group identities does it promote?
4. More importantly, what kind of work does it do? And who benefits?
5. How might it be modified, transformed, or deconstructed? How could this social space be inhabited differently?
As outlined in Week 8 Monday’s class, how you employ these will be based on which piece you chose, but the key point to remember is that analysing your chosen piece through asking and reflecting on such critical questions as outlined above is important.
