Essay 4: Personal Response and Final Research Paper Essays4 is a written analyses of A Raisin in the Sun., whereas essay 4 incorporates 10 secondary sources plus your textbook. Secondary sources are works of criticism about the primary source (your play in this instance). Both essays should quote from and paraphrase from both the primary source and all the secondary sources that are in the works cited page. Each essay should include between 10% and 20% quoted material. The audience of thepaper are general audiences that do not know a lot about the material, so you should mention the full name of the author and the full name of the play in the introduction. You should also define all terms carefully, including terms such as restrictive covenants, the Harlem Renaissance, feminism, the Civil Rights Movement, etc. Capitalize all names of well-known movements. There should be a brief summary of plot to help your general audience (either from a couple sentences to a paragraph in length), but your paper should focus on argument rather than summary. Your thesis should be a sentence that makes a claim, as always, in order to advance an argument. The body of the paper should support and develop this argument using quotations from the texts to do so. Secondary sources can be used to help you define terms, set up historical or biographical context, provide agreement to your claims, or provide a counter-argument that you will argue against. These sources should only be taken from moodle, not any outside source other than these. Thus, there should be three secondary sources in your works cited section in addition to your primary source (4 altogether). Target length: Final Research essay, 2100-3000 words (in addition to works cited page) Choose one (and only one) of the following options to write about: Summarize what Lloyd W. Brown writes about Lorraine Hansberry as an ironist in his Reappraisal of A Raisin in the Sun and provide your own response to it based on your own reading of the play. Disagree either with Browns main position or with part of his position. You need to experience plain what Browns argument is (what does he mean by ironist?), taking time to write a nicely developed paragraph summarizing his claims in your introductory paragraph. Your thesis should be a counter-claim, supported by at least two reasons. This thesis should be the last sentence in your first paragraph. This paragraph should be at least seven sentences long. Disagree with Michelle Gordons claim in the article Somewhat like War: The Aesthetics of Segregation, Black Liberation, and A Raisin in the Sun that A Raisin in the Sun attacks capitalist exploitation (121). Explain what capitalist exploitation actually is before you launch your own argument. Is it true that the lack of a central character is a flaw in this play, as expressed in A Raisin in the Sun Revisited, by J. Charles Washington (published in Black American Literature Forum, vol. 22, no. 1, 1988) (111). What reasons are given for believing this position? Why is this reasoning in your view flawed?Show more
