One of the current issues associated with organizational leadership in my context is the issue of power and politics. In my organization and several other state agencies similar to mine, there is a defined hierarchy that exists and generally guides the flow of information and describes the chain of command. The flow of pertinent information generally comes from the top down and is filtered though levels of leadership based on level of authority. The perceptions of the public in the organization can impact the way in which the organization functions internally. Since organizations such as this one is ultimately lead by an elected leader, perceptions from the public matter and have an impact on the organizational structure. Politics can influence the work that is required of this organization due to the fact that the organization exists in order to serve the public and much organizational funding is provided by taxpayers. This political aspect can lead to power issues since taxpayers and voting citizens are stakeholders who hold leverage. It can create a conflict between what the members of the organization think is appropriate and what the public perspective on a particular issue is. One strategy of change that could impact this organization is through utilizing the transactional model. The transactional model strategy would include collaborative efforts from the manager or authority figure as well as teams and committees who will work towards strategy implementation (Razik & Swanson, 2001). This strategy could help address the issues described through gathering helpful feedback and providing clarification and recommendations for more effective leadership strategies.
