Communication is a point of contention within the College of the Muscogee Nation (CMN). Faculty and staff members suffer the consequences of the lack of communication. While the intention is for CMN to be like a family, often there is miscommunication or none at all. Markman (2017) suggested the solution is not understanding why there is a lack of communication and what employees need.
CMN runs with a bureaucratic organization, and when decisions are made, the decisions are not always shared or inclusive. The expectations are for those impacted by the decision to follow as directed.
When communication is shared, it is buried within meetings, and endless memos and often does not make the necessary impact for employees. Agarwal and Garg (2012) wrote that there are many communication barriers, and within this list of obstacles, the one that most alines with CMN is the system design. Agarwal and Garg (2012) continue, “system design faults refer to problems with the structures or systems in place in an organization.” The lack of communication shows the division between administration and faculty. Highly qualified faculty yearn for better communication or feel that there is a better idea of what is happening around campus. Effective communication can open pathways for trust between employees and the administration.
CMN is developing to encompass better the needs of the students serviced through the college. This transition has to have a solid base of communication to improve the longevity of employee tenure. Adu-Oppong and Agyin-Birkorang (2014) described effective communication improves the following areas, “creates job satisfaction, lesser conflicts, increases productivity, formation of relationships, and proper utilization of resources.” This area has to improve for continued success.
