Midterm Instructions Length: 3-6 pages, font 12, 1.5 space, normal margins Submission date: Mon, Nov 29th (note that it is one week later than the original submission date as it appears in the syllabus). I will accept papers that will be submitted earlier. It is possible and even encouraged to write the papers in pairs. The paper should be dedicated to the analysis of a technology or a practice that follows the Foucadian understandings regarding the body as a cultural product and specifically the notion of the docile body. An example of an analysis that implements Foucault can be found in Bordo. You can also use Foucaults ideas about technologies of the self (a short summary of that can be found also in Lupton, Ch.2 posted on the moodle together with the other relevant readings under the section dealing with To Discipline and Punish.) Recommended Outline for the Paper: Introduction: introduce the topic: Foucaults theory in brief and your chosen technology/practice Summary: Summarize Foucauts main thesis and the most relevant points he makes in regards to docile bodies. Focus your summary on the points most relevant to your analysis. Analysis: Explain the technology, practice you have chosen. Analyze how this technology/practice is regulating and disciplining people bodies. Relate this discussion to Foucault and his insights but you can also add insights of your own. Summary: Summarize your main points and draw conclusions about the use of this technology, practice, docile bodies, the body as a cultural product, integration body-machine and other relevant things you will have found in your analysis.
