Scenario : You have been offered a work placement at a local Outdoor Education Centre. Before you start the placement, you must complete a training programme provided by the centre senior instructor team. To strengthen knowledge and understanding of your new role, you have been given the task of completing a report that is to be spilt in to two parts. Part one, is to explain the professional requirements of different roles of an outdoor instructor. Part two is to discuss the psychological impacts of the role of a leader in outdoor activities. Task Part one: The Roles of an Outdoor Activity Instructor To be an effective leader, an instructor must undertake many roles and responsibilities. In addition, they are to follow a wide range of professional requirements and to present in an appropriate and professional way. In the first part of your report you need to explain at least three different roles and their associated responsibilities that an outdoor activities instructor must carry out. Examples include; specialist activity instructors (e.g. British Canoe Paddlesport Instructor), outdoor sport coaches, multi-activity instructors, chief instructors, freelance instructors, centre managers, teachers and expedition leaders. In addition to the above you must explain the professional requirements needed for each of your selected roles that an outdoor activities instructor is expected to abide by, and describe the importance of these requirements. Part two: Psychological Factors To show clear knowledge and understanding of effective leadership, you are to investigate different psychological factors involved in leading outdoor activities. In this part of your report you must explain a variety of psychological factors involved in leading outdoor activities.
