By now you have already completed three writing projects: a short story analysis, a poetry analysis, and an analysis of a play. Analyzing a novel is very similar though it provides a unique problem. Even a novel like Twelve Nights at Rotter House is much longer and more cumbersome than a poem, play, or short story. In order to say something insightful, original, and interesting, you really have to focus on a single literary element that shifts the reader’s understanding of the theme. The questions in this assignment are intended to narrow your focus so that your paper might explore details that an initial reading might not catch. Your paper still needs a clear, cohesive thesis statement. Body paragraphs still need to be developed around points that support that thesis statement. Your thesis statement must include some specific statement regarding the theme of the novel. However, for this paper there is no research requirement.

For Writing Project #4, you will do a literary analysis of the novel, Twelve Nights at Rotter House by J.W. Ocker. Write a clear, cohesive, and original argument that answers one of the following questions:

1) Do a character analysis of Thomas. How does the characterization of Thomas change our understanding of the novel’s theme?

2) What do we learn about Elsa through Felix’s narration? How does he view their relationship? How does he view women in general? How does Elsa develop as a character in the novel and how does that development underscore Ocker’s theme regarding women?

3) Choose ONE recurring symbol in the novel (the arm, the darkness, the chairs, the dolls, etc…). How does this symbolism illustrate the novel’s theme?

Please do not answer more than one question and do not expand the question to talk about unrelated subjects. Stay focused and drill down into the text to develop a compelling reading of the novel.
