Now that you have read and analyzed The Crucible from start to finish, the themes within the play have likely become clear to you. What were the universal truths regarding the human condition that Arthur Miller presented in this play and what was his chief approach to conveying those truths?
As you will remember from your studies in Units 4 and 5, when writing a literary analysis essay, there are specific components necessary. Now is the time to read back through your interactive notebook and review all of your notes regarding character, plot, and theme.
While perusing, consider some possible themes you could address in your essay. Ponder how those themes are developed in the play. Examine your notes carefully, especially your selected quotes, to see if you could adequately support your ideas. Then, gradually narrow your focus to a single theme, the chief approach Miller utilizes to develop that theme, and specific examples from the play that support your claims.
Once you have explored the possibilities for what you could say and decided what you will say, it is time to begin writing your essay. As always, begin by crafting your theme statement. (A reminder of the necessary components is provided below.)
