Now that you’ve compared reading a classic play to watching an adaptation, it’s time to analyze other adaptations! Choose one of the following topics and write a 750-1000 word paper that discusses some aspect of adaptation:
a book that has been turned into a movie
a book that has been turned into a tv show
a movie that has a book version (afterwards)
a tv show that has a book version (afterwards)
a tv show that has been made into a movie
a tv show that has been remade
a movie that has spawned a tv show
a movie that spawned a sequel (or many sequels)
a movie based on real events
a movie that remakes an older movie
a song inspired by a movie/tv show/book
Consider the following questions as you formulate your thesis statement:
What changes were made during the adaptation process? How well do these changes work for the new medium?
If the original has a fan following, how did they respond to the remake? Why? Are they justified in their reaction?
Is the adaptation as good as the original? Can it ever be better?
Thing to keep in mind:
This paper should NOT be a retelling of the book vs the movie. Instead of simply recounting the plot, focus on the significance of the differences.
