Compare “Sonny’s Blues” with “Sticks” – o Notes about the texts: Both stories are about the burden of intergenerational family legacy, but they are very different. “Sonny’s Blues” is about a family dealing with personal grief under the weight of serious socio-economic pressure, whereas “Sticks” is about a family dealing with abuse that is not externally driven (no one made Dad abuse his children, I mean). Still, both stories are about fathers who hurt their children, unintentionally or not. Both stories are about how a nameless narrator/protagonist identifies the hurt and what he does about it.
