Rhetoric is embedded in all aspects of daily life. The consumed coffee, meticulous mascara and even the choice of ones school was influenced on some level, by the art of persuasion.
Essay 1 is a 600-word written analysis of the rhetorical triangle, specifically through the medium of advertisement. Students will find one to two commercials of their choice to analyze.
To keep this assignment relevant, commercials must have been released between 2020-present. The student will not provide a summary of the commercial. Instead, the student will write an analysis of how the elements of rhetoric are imbued within the work to persuade the viewer to believe the content.
Students with a clear intro that leads to a thesis, with a body paragraph that has evidence, citation and elaboration with an effective conclusion that does not repeat but brings insight, will receive the best grades.
Essay Checklist
A commercial or two that is in English
Paper is properly formatted in Times New Roman, size 12, double spaced
No cover page, just use proper heading in MLA format
Student remains within the word count (do not exceed 700 words)
A clear intro was written with a thesis statement
Student uses transitional phrases to move from one point to the next
Body is laden with evidence of the rhetorical triangle that commercial uses
Student cites in proper MLA format for videos and provides elaboration after evidence
