Individual Assignment (125 points): During the semester students will be required to write a paper that focuses on the topic of COMPENSATION (PAY AND BENEFITS) PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT. The student is to develop and submit a paper up to 1,500 words (or greater) that addresses the issue/problem the student selects from the 4 listed below (students are encouraged to be creative in their approach to the problem). NOTE: THE DECIDE MODEL IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT.
Students must select one of the following cases:
1. Why is internal alignment an important policy in a strategic perspective of compensation and how does it affect the business strategy/operations?
2. Identify and discuss the factors that influence internal pay structures; which ones do you consider the most important? Why?
3. Internal structures are part of the incentives offered in organizations. Look into any organization: your college, workplace, or the grocery store where you shop. Describe the flow of work. How is the job structure aligned with the organization’s business and the work flow; and how do you believe it influences employee behaviors?
4. What are the pros and cons of having employees involved in compensation decisions and what forms can employee involvement take – Justify your choices!
Written submissions must follow the APA writing style; papers must develop the author’s argument and provide criteria for taking the position represented by the argument with data/evidence to support it. Arguments must be fully developed as well as solutions. Up to 50 points deducted for weak arguments/positions and up to 50 points deducted for failure to support the argument/position with criteria based data.
