Think about an argument you’ve had with someone (or more than one person) that had, at its root, a fundamental disagreement or difference in perspective about language–whether it be a single word that sparked tension, or some larger instance of miscommunication (e.g. where what was said was not what was heard, or what was meant was not understood, etc.). Craft an essay in which you illustrate this disagreement/tension/difference for a reader outside of it, and then explore some possible interpretations of it from the angles and analysis offered by our textbook chapters. To what extent does the miscommunication or language rift reveal deeper and wider differences (beyond the linguistic) between you and this other person?
