The goal of Paper III is to propose a solution to a problem that faces college students on our campus. Ideally, this problem will be one with which you have personal experience. To complete this paper, you must consider these specific points: 1. Select a problem from the list provided (see below). 2. Explain the problem; you must BOTH prove that the problem exists and explain how it affects college students, both at UMHB and potentially nationwide. 3. Propose what, specifically, students at UMHB can do to solve the problem. This assignment goes far beyond “someone should do something!” WHO should do something, and WHAT, SPECIFICALLY, should they do? What resources does UMHB provide that can help, and how should students access them? 4. IF UMHB′s current resources to help with the issue are insufficient, what should we be doing? 5. Consider also both counterargument (what other solutions have been proposed, and why is this one better?) and refutation (what problems/questions might people have regarding this solution, and how would you answer them?) 6. Describe the result you predict from this change—how will life be better for our students when they follow your plan? This paper makes an argument, so it should conform to the various rules of argument discussed in class: It should begin with an introduction that makes a specific claim. The rest of the paper should support that claim with well-developed body paragraphs that include topic sentences, evidence, and analysis of the evidence. It should be subject to Aristotelian analysis (thus, a reader should be able to identify Logos, Ethos, and Pathos in the argument). It should use as part of the support specific examples, including information about the problem, specific details about UMHB resources that will help students with this problem, and a detailed explanation of projected results. The key here is DETAIL—don’t speak in generalities! Be specific! Since you must PROVE that the problem exists instead of just saying so and you will need specific details, the paper will require sources. Since you must have sources, you must also have proper citation and documentation in MLA style, including both parenthetical citation and a Works Cited page with proper entries. Source type one: Secondary research–you will need to look up general information about the problem itself, how it affects college students in the US, and potentially what other universities do to solve it. Source type two: Primary research–you will need to interview the people on campus who provide the resource to find out information about how students access it and what it can do for them. You may also use the university website and the various university publications (the Catalog, the Student Handbook, etc.) OR surveys of current students in this area. Be sure to incorporate strategies for introductions, conclusions, and paragraph development that we have discussed in class. You may only use ″I″ or 1st and 2nd PPOV in the paragraph before the conclusion. General Requirements: Paper III should be 1000 – 2000 words long/ 4-6 pages, NOT including the Works Cited page. Paper III should make use of at least 4 reputable, credible sources, which must be properly cited and documented, both in-text and on the Works Cited page, in MLA style.
