Imagine you are a counselor evaluating a Japanese American woman, aged 30. She is a first-generation American and moved to the U.S. just 2 years ago. She has been referred to you by the local Emergency Room physician for suspicion of self-harm. Upon your interview with her, you find that she is unwilling to speak. You are having a great deal of difficulty making an assessment of her safety based on this fact.
