Watch it before responding to the prompts below. Explain how Chomsky’s argument challenges the behaviorist model of the mind. Do you think that Chomsky is correct, that children do possess specific and innate cognitive tools (like an LAD) that allow them to learn language differently than adults? What does this entail as to whether the mind is a blank slate or not? Provide at least one example of how the learning language environment for children is less than ideal. “Purple socks eat sunshine fearfully”. What’s amazing about this sentence, is that it means nothing. It is in effect meaningless. Notice two things. That this sentence is ridiculous, and that, you’ve likely never heard it spoken before. And yet, you can nonetheless tell me that it seems like a grammatically correct sentence. This is to point out that we are so good at language, that we can generate an infinite number of sentences, even ones that don’t convey any meaning, but we can still perceive if those sentences are follow our rules of grammar. It’s a fascinating realization. Thus, please create your own grammatically correct sentence that you believe no one has ever heard before!
