Explore how the form of popular culture adopts and adapts the Arthurian legend. What elements are retained? What elements are transformed to suit a modern audience? Why? If you would like, you can expand on the ideas from your first or second essay to explore how a character or motif has evolved in today’s popular culture.

Most discussion forums are approximately three pages in length, minimum. Although forums are not fully developed essays, they should demonstrate many of the qualities of good essays. I will look for the following:

THESIS: The discussion forum should have a clear thesis that focuses on the topic at hand.

CLARITY: Sentences and argument should be coherent.

LOGIC: The forum should demonstrate critical thinking. It should also demonstrate
that the student has read the entire text, not just a section of the text.

DEVELOPMENT: The forum should sufficiently develop ideas and follow through with the thesis. Quotes from the text should be used to support and develop the argument.

ORGANIZATION: The forum should use transitions effectively and stick to the topic at hand. VOICE/ STYLE: Voice and style should be appropriate to topic and show personal engagement with the topic.

REVISION: The forum should be proofread carefully to avoid errors in grammar, syntax, and logic.

DOCUMENTATION: The forum should adhere to MLA
guidelines with proper integration and citation of quotes.

Comments: You will typically be required to comment on at least one of your classmate’s responses. Comments should respond to and faciliate conversation among your classmates. Responses to classmates’ discussions should show active engagement with the topic and move beyond “great job” comments. For instance, responses may suggest other areas to look at, pose questions, or add to the ideas of classmates.

Here is a descriiption of the Final Essay:

Our final essay is on a post-medieval Arthurian representation of your choice. You can choose one or more Arthurian-themed novels, films, comic strips, digital games, cartoons, collectibles, visual arts, etc. You must begin with a definition of medievalism. You can use the definitions on from the articles I have posted to our website. You can also construct your own definition, but you must draw from these or other reputable scholarly sources (and be sure to reference them). Also, you must actively reference at least one medieval work that we have read this semester as it relates to the post-medieval work. This work must incorporate research. You’ll need at least two secondary scholarly sources. You can use the resources in Readings if you would like.

Goals: Explore how the form of popular culture adopts and adapts the Arthurian legend. What elements are retained? What elements are transformed to suit a modern audience? Why? If you would like, you can expand on the ideas from your first or second essay to explore how a character or motif has evolved in today’s popular culture.
