Why is freedom of speech important, especially speech that you disagree with? What are the protections of the 1st Amendment? Does the 1st Amendment protect all forms of speech? Can anybody say anything they want, wherever they want, to whomever they want? Can the government restrict ideas or speech considered hurtful, even before they are expressed? Should speech that some people find hurtful and offensive be banned, particularly on college campuses? Analyze and Identify problems of not allowing freedom of speech in American society or on college campuses? What factors extend beyond free speech? Think about why James Madison believed in free speech as a natural right and why. How does free speech help to create a self-governing society? The questions to consider when writing your essay: Use the questions to critically think about the material provided while incorporating specific examples relevant from all the material presented. Do not answer the questions directly in the paper. The assignment requires incorporating and referring to specific examples from all the material presented and specifically referencing the articles/video material, while also incorporating your point of view that will create a more informative essay. Example: While (name of the person speaking in video) suggested that….or the article referred to…. Develop and organize an essay. As with an essay, students will need a thesis statement. Citations are only used if a quote is included, but must not be more than two or three sentences in total throughout the paper.
