Part 1: Identification. Complete a few sentences for each below.
This analysis will help you to dissect how the piece is constructed according to what norms and conventions, and how the author uses discourse, as well as what is revealed about the author/speaker of the piece’s identity or purpose. A brief descriiption of some types of answers are given in parenthesis, so that you understand the direction each is looking to go in. Use full sentences where appropriate to explain your answer.
Genre (Narrative, Non-fiction essay, Fiction, Poem, Persuasive essay, Report…)
Purpose (To inform, to persuade, to explain, to reveal, to express, to argue…)
Thesis/Themes (Importance of human basic rights, the impact of guilt, the importance of unity….)
Argument Structure (Organization or Argument Strategy—built from least to most impactful, most to least, local to global, emotional appeal, statistical framework)
Evidence (Type of examples used, type of points made, personal anecdotes, statistics, facts, or rational appeal, or rhetorical strategy, metaphors used)
Audience (Appeal to other experts, appeals to common citizens, appeal to opposition, to the misinformed, to upper classes, to future generations…)
Discourse Conventions/Modes (Dialects, Academic English, neighborhood/class styles, informal English, or artistic stylistic—short sentences, long sentences, repetition, symbolic language…)

Part 2: Question and Answer. Answer the following questions in full sentences.
* What beliefs, values, and creative choices are conveyed in the text?
*How do you interpret the stylistic choices (language, syntax, organization, structure, characters) and how they show the attitude, identity, and intentions of the author?
*How do these discourse modes achieve the author’s desired effect (how do they work, both in the piece itself and on you as the reader?)

Part 3: Provide a discourse analysis . Using the answers from above, reorganize your text into a well-constructed essay. Describe how you interpreted the meaning of the text, combining both personal reflection with specific evidence—do so with a thesis and following up with main points and your examples. Include at least two quotes in the essay, one per “main point” paragraph. Cite with (author #) at the end of a quote, or the end of the paragraph if paraphrasing.
The thesis and introduction of the text (author, title, historical context) will be your introduction paragraph. Make sure the thesis lists the main points and shows how the points relate to each other in a way that builds/creates/argues for your interpretation (use conjunctions to help you, words like “due to,” “because of,” “therefore,” “nevertheless “).
Use topic sentences to structure the paragraphs and make these points very clear. Go in the same order in essay as you do in the thesis. It is important to structure the body of the essay in a way that is reflected in the structure of your thesis. This will prove your thesis and is the whole point of the essay.
Show how your main ideas (topic sentences) are in relationship with each other so that they build an argument (your thesis/interpretation). Do this by connecting them as you go in the topic sentence spot, or in the last sentence of the paragraph spot—where you can transition to the next point/paragraph.
This is how to build the body paragraphs.
Topic Sentence
Introduce Example or evidence (and connect to topic sentence)
Give example or evidence
Explain the example in your own words and link it to the main point—describe the connection between the example and what you want it show/how you want the reader of the essay to interpret it to see your point—referring back to the topic sentence.
Connect back to the larger structure (thesis) and transition to next point.
This concludes the paragraph.

When done, finish with a brief conclusion that summarizes your main points and restates thesis/interpretation. Add a personal flourish that relates the significance of the reading or the interpretation, and perhaps connect the reading to a larger context.

This is not an essay, Can you please follow and answer 3 parts of the reading response format?
