Write an essay on Issues Facing America. These groups correlate to the Supplemental Readings from the week’s lesson. Our goal this week is to examine the aspects of your chosen article according to the Toulmin approach to argumentation. Group Selection: Choose one reading from the ″Issues Facing America″ section of the Supplemental Readings list. Post an initial response to the reading within your chosen group to get the conversation started. Reply to peers and instructor within your group. You′ll spend the entire week in the same conversation group (although you’re welcome to visit other groups if you would like to discuss more than the one reading, but it is not required). Max 5 people per group. Prompt: Aim to discuss the argumentation strategies used in the reading. Start a conversation with your initial post, then join the conversation others have started. Keep the convo moving. Contribute to the conversation with something unique. If others have already said what you wanted to say in their initial post, comment in your initial post on what’s been said then add your thoughts so you’re contributing rather than repeating. Imagine we′re all sitting at a table and discussing the reading. Initial post must: State the purpose and thesis/claim. Identify the elements of argument you find in the essay (warrant, rebuttal, claim, etc). Offer specific examples of each. Are any of the elements missing? How did this affect the argument? Are there any aspects of this essay you admire as a writer? For instance, did you like how the author approached the introduction and find that approach inspiring for your own writing? Are there any aspects of this essay you thought to be weak? How could they be improved? One initial post of approximately 300 words and two peer responses to classmates’ initial posts of 150 words each. Feel free to keep chatting and post to others, though the word count requirement is only for the initial post and two replies.
