Overview:
Looking at the various maps included in my presentations or taken from another source, such as
the maps of the Ancient World included in the collection at
choose ONE (1) and only one city that was in place and functioning before the year 200 bce.
Your city might be in the Americas, East or Southeast Asia, North, Central, West, or Southern
Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, or Europe. Please do not choose a region, nation, or an
empire. Its a city that we are searching. Okay? Research that city, looking particularly at its
trade and political relationships, and craft an essay that offers a cohesive portrait of its place
within trade networks in its region before the year 200 bce. In short, With whom were they
trading, if with anyone? And, What were they trading? Were they successful at it?
There is no rule concerning the number of sources you should use in researching this
assignment. However, a) one is never enough and b) you must use at least one (1) academic
article drawn from the research databases accessed via the Alkek Library website. See the
links at: (attached as file)
The databases offer full-text versions of thousands of articles that appeared in academic
journals over the past 100 or 150 years. Draw on at least one of those sources to make your case!

Questions to consider:
In writing your essay, your priority should be in offering a coherent and cohesive picture of your
citys role in the Ancient World. You might do well to refer to the four terms discussed in the
slides in relation to cities urbanization, breadth, integration, and specialization as
organizing concepts for your work. The following list of questions concerning regional trade
relationships, local products, and local infrastructure is intended to aid your thinking in building
that picture. You dont need to answer each of these questions explicitly. Instead, let them
direct you toward providing the kinds of information that might contribute to such a portrait.
1) Where was the city located? What natural resources were most readily available to it? Was it
sited on a river, on a sea, or on an ocean? Was it located on a flat plain or in hilly ground?
Was the local area a rich agricultural area or offering other resources?
2) When was the city thought to have been founded? By whom? When before the year 200 bce
was it at the height of its influence? What conditions made it particularly influential at
that time?
3) What was the primary economic activity of the citys residents? If it was an agricultural
center, where and who were the primary consumers of those agricultural goods? If it was
a trading center, what products were the most often traded there? Where did they come
from and where were they going to?
4) What human-made structure represented the center of the city? What was its function? Who
built it? When? Why? What other human-made infrastructure (such as a port or
maintained roads) were particularly integral to the economic success of the city?
5) What sorts of materials do your sources cite as giving information concerning your city? Do
we have a lot of information concerning your city or does it remain still obscured by
time? Do you feel comfortable with the materials your sources cite? Is there anything in
particular you would like to see uncovered to shed more light on your city?
Write up your findings in a paper of 23 pages (500750 words) and submit your essay to me
via email. As always, I will expect your essay to be proofread (no typos), with attention to
grammatical correctness and clarity, and with all of your sources credited in the text and in a
Works Cited list at the end of the essay. Refer to the Turabian site through the University of
Chicago Press for guidance on formatting citations:
