Descriiption of Informal Writing
Informal writing is similar to a spoken conversation. It is thinking on paper rather than thinking out loud. Informal writing takes a personal tone as if you were speaking directly to your audience (the reader). You can use the first or third person point of view (e.g. I and we), and you are likely to address the reader using second person (e.g. you and your).
Informal writing is exploratory and encourages students to process course content and formulate ideas in their own words without worrying about grammatical and spelling errors.
There may be incomplete sentences or ellipsis (…) to make points. The student is free to use contractions (e.g. I’m, couldn’t, doesn’t) and abbreviations (e.g. T.V, photos). In informal writing the student can show empathy towards the reader. Furthermore, through empathy the student may help the reader understand the complexity of a thought.

When to use Formal and Informal Writing
A formal writing style is not necessarily “better” than an informal style, rather each style serves a different audience and care should be taken in choosing which style to use in each case.
Writing for professional purposes is likely to require the formal style, although individual communications can use the informal style once you are familiar with the recipient. Also note that e-mails tend to be less formal than letters. However, you should still avoid the use of “text talk” (e.g. U in place of You, R in place of are) when using informal writing. If in doubt as to how formal your writing should be, it is usually better to err on the side of caution and be formal rather than informal.

Formal Paper – Guidelines
Note: You may want to refer to the suggested age-related websites on page 3 to assist you in writing your papers as well as literature reviews on your selected topics.
Guidelines for Two Formal Papers:
Each is 15%, which equals 30% of total grade
Students will have the opportunity to write 2 paper (2.5-pages) each on one of the topics discussed in class. There will be specific dates for submitting each formal paper and the revisions.

The formal papers should discuss the following items:
o A brief background of the topic/film/documentary. (Do not retell the story)
o What issue/s does the documentary address that are parallel to this course
o How does the documentary help or hinder addressing the issue (for example, does the documentary reinforce negative stereotypes or does it try to break negative stereotypes of the elderly???)
o What recommendations would you provide to improve the issue being presented/discussed in the film/documentary
