This assignment requires you to select a movie, a TV series, or a similar piece of popular media that engages with the course’s overall focus on sex, gender, the body, sexuality, and kinship. Topics include (but are not limited to) a Hollywood blockbuster that picks out gay or trans stories as a central theme; an old European black-and-white film that portrays gender differences in a relevant way; a West African Nollywood TV series that revolves around specific ideas of the family as one of its key motifs; or a documentary series that discusses gendered violence in the US. Once you have identified the popular media piece you want to focus on, you will have to find one (1) academic and anthropologically relevant source that you will use in your analysis of that film or TV series. Sources from the syllabus may not be used. This source should help your argument reach a deeper level of analysis than your own critical reflection could otherwise provide. You will then be required to write a short reflective essay of 1000 to 1200 words in which you critically analyze your selected case through the anthropological lens employed in the course. Please use APA format for your references and bibliography.
