Below is a selection of Thomas More’s Utopia. First, you will want to read this passage:
https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2130/2130-h/2130-h.htm#chap10
This book is a fictional account of More being told a story about a near-perfect paradise from an explorer, Raphael Hythloday (Hythloday never existed, by the way).
Scroll down Chapter 10 and begin reading at “Thus have I described to you, as particularly as I could, . . .” until the end of the e-book (should be six paragraphs).
“Utopia” is a word that More made up, combining the Ancient Greek words for “good” and “place.” The opposite of a utopia is a dystopia, an undesirable or bad place. Examples of these are Animal Farm, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Hunger Games, and countless others. I am sure many of you have either 1) dreamed of a utopia or 2) read or watched a dystopia. Here, I want you to discuss the following:
What is, in your mind, a utopia? Is it similar to this descriiption? Do you think it could happen? Why or why not?
Have you read or seen any dystopias? If not, read a summary of one. Do you think a dystopia can happen? Why or why not?
Citing just this is fine. Use (More Ch. 10) as your in-text, bibliography for this is
More, Thomas. Utopia. ed. Henry Morley. Project Gutenberg, April 2000. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2130/2130-h/2130-h.htm#chap10
Again, use your own words. Only 50% maximum can be quotes. Check grammar, etc. Replies for this forum should be specific to someone’s post, not just “I agree,” or anything of the sort.
