Search engine: Google Chrome Key words: Borrowed nursing theories and empiric knowledge development Returned eight results Key words: Borrowed nursing theories 2021 Returned seven results Search Engine: Microsoft Bing Key words: Borrowed nursing theories and empiric knowledge development Returned 22 results Key words: Borrowed nursing theories 2021 Returned one result Search Engine: YouTube Key words: Borrowed nursing theories and empiric knowledge development Returned one advertisement from an online nursing school. Key words: borrowed nursing theory Returned three unrelated topics regarding work as a nurse. Identify the types of sites you retrieved the information from. On YouTube, videos were personal and posted by individuals who worked as nurses. Under Google, the information retrieved came from businesses trying to sell study tools or flash cards. Many also included blogs and samples of student papers. Microsoft Bing directed me to academic journals and government sites, such as National Institute of Health. Bing also included blogs, internationally based editorials about nursing theorists, diagrams regarding various nursing theories, and businesses offering to provide custom written essays. Provide a summary of your findings. In your summary provide at least 2 specific detailed examples The article that most similarly related to the discussion topic for this week was written by a group of nurses who wanted to determine the effectiveness of borrowing theories for the development of nursing theories (Villarruel et al., 2001). They claimed that the available literature to support this nursing phenomena of borrowing theories was inadequate (Villarruel et al., 2001, p. 158). The authors proposed a plan to determine effectiveness of borrowed theories by conducting their own study (Villarruel et al., 2001). The most common sites found were blogs, discussions, and businesses trying to sell custom essays. The online essay writing business known as, OnlineNursingPapers, had samples of papers on the topic of borrowed theories (OnlineNursingPapers, .). The site claimed they provided, scholarly papers with great American Psychological Association formatting (OnlineNursingPapers, .). Interestingly, the sample essay this site provided had many errors and poor American Psychological Association formatting. References OnlineNursingPapers. (.). Google Search engine was used Keywords used included borrowed nursing theories empiric knowledge development 2021, which yield 1,300,000 results Identify the types of sites you retrieved the information form (., blogs, online peer-review journals, YouTube, etc). Note: minimum of 3 resources of at least two different formats must be used. The resources posted in this weeks block cannot count as any of the resources used Despite adding the keyword 2021, I retrieved article that were dated from the early 2000s. The Literature was reviewed and screened for eligibility based on what I was looking for. Journals and articles older than 5 years was eliminated as they did not fit into what I was looking to review. After searching through several results, I was able to find blogs, pdf presentations, scholarly articles. The 3 resources I thoroughly reviewed were: A blog by Paladines, C (2020) A blog from (2018) A scholarly article by Lor, Backonia & Lauver (2017) Provide a summary of your findings. In your summary provide at least 2 specific detailed examples A) The blog by was very interesting. It explained how non-nursing (borrowed) theories applied to the nursing profession. A great example of a non-nursing theory that Nurses apply in practice everyday is the Maslows hierarchy of Need which starts which basic/essential needs and ends with self-actualization needs, that focus on personal potential and growth. Nurses can help patient reach their Self Actualization needs by teaching and motivating patient to care for themselves and take control on their own illness (, 2018). Safety needs are met when Nurses protect patients from harm and provide safe & effective care (, 2018). Lewins theory of planned change is another borrowed theory that can be applied to patient care. The model includes 3 stages: unfreezing, moving, and freezing- which must occur before changes become part of culture/part of the norm. Changes become the new norm and are accepted in the freezing phase (, 2018). Nursing leadership use this model in practice lead a positive change in patient satisfaction (, 2018). B) The scholarly article by Lor, Backonia & Lauver (2017) discussed how nursing researchers can apply theory to generate empiric nursing knowledge more efficiently. This is relevant because if nurses had a better understanding of theory-guided research, they could assess better, select, and apply theory-guided interventions in their practices (Lor, Backonia & Lauver, 2017). When theories are used as guides throughout the research phase, researchers can build scientific knowledge more effectively than if they were not theory guided (Lor, Backonia & Lauver, 2017). This article explains steps to take when incorporating theory as a guide to research. Conceptualize the clinical problem When it comes to identifying clinical problems to study, theory selection should be based on the conceptual dimensions, antecedents, and consequences of their clinical problems, after the review of the literature has been conducted. Having an in depth understanding of the clinical problem, would allow researchers to select theories and methods that are aligned with it (Lor, Backonia & Lauver, 2017). How to select the theory Before selecting a theory, the researcher must also determine whether the proposed theory has concepts congruent with the clinical problem, while also ensuring that the population studied would be appropriate for the theory. The selected theory (if chosen) should be examined for its degree of empirical support (Lor, Backonia & Lauver, 2017). The Theory should guide the study aim, method and analysis and when researchers summarize findings from a theory-guided study, they can use the components of the theory to organize their report and help readers see how the specific theory guided their study support (Lor, Backonia & Lauver, 2017).
