Simone De Beauvoir poses the question ″What is a woman?″ and then concludes that woman is a situation. She says this situation is that woman is the ″other″ of the human race. One of the reasons that Beauvoir argues that women have not been able to overcome their role as Other is because she believes that some derive satisfaction from their role as Other. If they accept this role, they are relieved of the burden of having to define their own essence or purpose.
