You are to identify and select an idea for a research project. Task 1 requires you to provide responses – in bullet point form – to each of the questions 1. What are you trying to do? Articulate your research project aim or problem using absolutely no jargon. 2. What is the justification for doing this project? Why is it a significant/interesting/important project? (provide two examples / references that demonstrate your justification ) 3. Who will care about your project, and why? 4. How is your project idea handled today, and what are (if any) the limits of current practice? (provide three examples / references that demonstrate the work of others that are similar to your proposed project) 5. What is the opportunity or new innovation in your project? Why do you think it will be successful? (provide one example / reference that highlights the new opportunity, or supports your reasoning for success) 6. What are the two “biggest” risks to completing this project? How might they impact the project? 7. Are there any special resources required (data, software and/or hardware)? What are they? 8. Is the project feasible? Can you complete the project within two semesters? 9. How will you assess your progress? Can you list one tool or technique to help keep you on track? Task 2 requires you to write a research project proposal pitch. Your project proposal pitch is your chance to explain the significance of your project and should demonstrate the rationale and importance of your project. In some ways it will be very much like the introduction of an academic paper. The purpose is to give your reader: -a high-level introduction to the general topic area -an overview of the big challenges/opportunities and what the benefits of your project could be (this is the rationale and significance for your project) -a summary of how the challenges/opportunities are handled today in current practice and/or as described in current scientific literature -a final paragraph where you define your project aim and objectives. This type of structure moves from general to specific detail and provides context for the reader before narrowing down to your particular aim and objectives. You should weave your key references into your pitch. In writing your proposal you should pay close attention to: -constructing reasoned and critical arguments supported with evidence; -appropriate use and citing of relevant examples and/or literature you rely on in your arguments; -the quality of your written English (you should write in a scientific style, as if your audience were other researchers in the area). research pitch of no more 1,000 words (not including references)Show more
