I need a response to this discussion: As we reach module six of this course we are tasked to discuss this Institute of Medicines (IOM) aims for improving healthcare quality in a healthcare setting and what factors to be considered when utilizing this method. In addition, this discussion will also provide information on ensuring that hospitals are ensuring that they are meeting the needs of the population that they are serving. As many individuals seek medical attention in hospitals across the nation, they rely on good healthcare quality to ensure that they will be cared for to the best of the organization’s ability. Many hospitals or organizations and healthcare systems navigate through challenges and opportunities of the continuous changes of the evolving health care environment (Bhatt & Bathija, 2018). Health care professionals must take into consideration many factors in order to provide the best quality of care, such as being culturally diverse and train staff accordingly and efficiently to ensure that they are meeting the needs of the vulnerable population. This is an essential and an important aspect of being a professional healthcare employee and being able to understand the cultural backgrounds of the patients you are caring for. Healthcare organizations must continue to strive to eliminate health and health care disparities, which continue to exist in healthcare for an enormous amount of individuals from racial, ethnic, and cultural minorities (Bhatt & Bathija, 2018). The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has developed six dimensions to aim for improving healthcare quality. The six dimensions are 1) being respectful to patients values, preferences, and expressed needs, 2) coordinated and integrated, 3) provide information, communication, and education, 4) ensure physical comfort, 5) provide support to relieve fear and anxiety, and 6) involve family and friends (Tzelepis et al., 2015). Being a part of the healthcare team, nurses take into consideration this helpful aim, to appropriately provide care to their patients and ensure the best quality of care. Nurses express cultural competency and provide care based on cultural preferences such as providing privacy to patients when needed and utilizing translation support services so that patients understand the type of care that is being delivered to them. Education is also a big part of the quality of care because not many patients understand the disease processes and nurses are able to provide helpful information so they are able to care for themselves respectively. Family and friends are also a big part of caring for patients and nurses include them in the planning of care for additional support. Family and friends can improve patient-provider rapport, help with information exchange coming from the healthcare team, and encourage decision-making involvement (Tzelepis et al., 2015).
