As you read in the textbook this week, Ida B. Wells-Barnett is the brave woman who led a global anti-lynching crusade. Lets dive in deeper to her exposes on lynchings in American culture and society. The first document is an excerpt from one of her first publishing efforts aimed at exposing the American crisis in lynchings, from 1892, “Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases.” The second excerpt is from her report titled, “A Red Record.” The third excerpt is from her own memoir “Crusade for Justice,” formally published in 1970 years after her death. What follows after that are just a small sample of the photographic evidence of lynchings that historical collections preserve for study, analysis, and a myriad of other educational purposes. These photos are graphic but must be faced with courage for a deeper understanding of Americas dark past. For more information about these and other archival photo collections, see the public site: withoutsantuary.org WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2 After reading these 3 provided excerpts and observing this photo collection, record and elaborate on any 10 observations from among the provided excerpts or photos that stood out to you, or resonated with you, or made a deep impression on you [following the same instructions, directions, rubric expectations, and format from the first primary source writing assignment post in Module 1]. As always, in your reflection, reflect on what new history you learned that you did not know or were not aware of before this experience. Or reflect on how these sources reinforced what you already knew or learned in a previous class or experience.Show more
