This class includes several pilots with experience as a two pilot crew flying FMS equipped aircraft. One of the standard FMS procedures is for both pilots to agree that the FMS is properly programmed before EXECUTING. Often times, pilots are quick to agree without actually reviewing the FMS content. We can become complacent because we have done it so many times before, and often we are under time pressure to get underway. This may also occur in more mundane tasks like driving, or working with power tools, or cooking with sharp objects.
Do you have any experiences you can share where complacency crept into your routine? Can you offer any advice on how to recognize and avoid becoming complacent? If you fly with an FMS, how do you manage to actually check and verify the programmed inputs?
