Interdependence/Conflict between Secularity and Religion Are we in a post-secular era? Does the term post-secular age capture the reality of the present historical moment? If so how do we understand the secular consciousness and imagination that is prevelant in our times? What do we mean by secular and religious? This lecture wil contextualise (provincialise) the historical categorisation of secularity and religion. Despite apparent conflict it will argue that these two categories are interdependent giving rise to multiple secularisms and religiocities that form the sources (ontologies) of ethics. Leading scholars who engage with the interdiciplinary intersections of religion and secularity will be introdued (e.g. Jrgen Habermas, Charles Taylor, Enrique Dussel, Talal Asad, Jose Casanova, Martha Nussbaum, Judith Bulter, Kancha Ilaiah, Ram Punyani, Irfan Ahmad, Saba Mahmood, Romila Thapar, Akeel Bigrami, Boaventura de Souza Santos) Seminar Readings: Craig Calhoun, Mark Juergensmeyer and Jonathan Vanantwerpen, Introduction, in Rethinking Secularism, Oxford/New York: Oxford University Press, 2011.
