As filmmakers began to explore how they could present time and space via editing, they went down a couple of dead ends before arriving at a consensus about what audiences would ″see″ when then moved closer to a subject (closeup) or tried to show characters moving outside one frame and then appearing in the next shot. Using examples from the Edwin S. Porter, Alice Guy (Blache), and D.W. Griffith films you saw, find something that feels odd or confusing in TWO of those films and explore why it doesn′t make sense compared to something ″normal″ like the Mack Sennett or one of the Chaplin films.
