What changed in America that allowed for the multiple civil rights movements (plural) of the 1940s through the 1970s? Seemingly out of nowhere, strong organized movements supporting equal rights for African-Americans, Chicano Americans, and Native Americans pushed hard against the defense of the traditional concept of America as an extension of Europe.
