To what extent can music affect political consciousness? At certain points in this module, it was suggested that a conservative, reactionary or complacent political outlook is cultivated by mainstream, corporate-invested-in artist(e)s; but to what extent is the opposite possible? Another way to look at this question might be to consider the musicians responsibility towards their community or their society at large when making music this can be very personal, in terms of your own sense of responsibility as a performer/musician. You may take a specific case study (or several, comparatively) from the recorded repertoire available (bands, artists, performers etc.) or from a less well-known, closer to home resource. o How does the music of a given period or style reflect or respond to the ways that people feel about how they are treated by the powers that be (which is to say their respective administrations or the dominant corporations in their immediate community)?
