Write an essay on Race & gender In early America.In this discussion we are going to start wrestling with how we understand the history of women in what becomes the United States, and the ways in which cultural differences impacted relations between colonists and indigenous Americans. Use the readings from Women’s America and Through Women’s Eyes to answer these questions.
In your post you will answer one of these two questions:
How does viewing this history from women’s perspectives change the story?
What challenges do historians face in discovering and understanding the history of women in 16th-17-century America?
How do you understand the concept of the “gender frontier” and how is it relevant to our readings?
And you will also answer one of the following questions:
What were Native American women’s lives like before European contact? How did this differ by region/nation? How did contact change women’s lives and roles?
How did the fact that early European invaders of the Americas were mostly male influence the way they interacted with Native American societies and Native women in particular?
What did European men focus on in their mentions of African women? What can this tell us about Europeans?
In your posts and responses try to connect the “big picture” of the first question to the more specific historical questions that follow.
