What were your initial reactions to La Bamba and Mi Familia/My Family. Was there a favorite scene, or a scene that stood out to you? Why do you think these two films were such mainstream successes? Both Luis Valdez (director of La Bamba) and Gregory Nava (director of My Family) introduce Mexican American families to the big screen! Nava’s beautiful depiction of the Sanchez family against the backdrop of various historical events, and Valdez’ depiction of the story of Ritchie Valens at the height of the Rock & Roll era. Was there something new you learned about Mexican American culture/history through these films? If not, what do you think of Nava’s or Valdez depiction of Mexican American culture/history? In what ways do you or do you not relate to the Sanchez or Valens family? Were there any Latinx stereotypes revisited in this film?
