Since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody drew attention to the over-representation of Indigenous offenders in the criminal justice system, Australian states and territories have introduced various policy and practitioner methods to address this issue. Alternative sentencing measures can be used to tackle this problem, and in this report to policy makers you will be required to assess a particular intervention strategy and its effectiveness in addressing the neo-colonial impacts of Australian Justice. For this assignment, you will assess a particular community corrections penalty option in relation to its use with Indigenous offenders. Penalties you can consider include any of the following: Community-Based Orders (CBOs); Community Conferencing; Youth Conferencing; Circle Sentencing; Customary Law and Sentencing; Women’s Mentoring Programs; Transitional Centres; or, An applied penalty/strategy of your own choosing, not listed above (consider consulting with your tutor before taking this approach). You may choose to specifically focus on a particular demographic (juvenile offenders, women, offenders in remote communities, offenders with mental illness or cognitive disability, etc.), or your report can be considered in regards to any Indigenous offender. Your report may include a discussion of the factors that influence offending within this demographic, interacting barriers to receiving community corrections penalties (. remoteness, housing, poverty, health, etc.), changes to community-based penalties, and contemporary cultural implications for the victim(s) and offender(s). Ensure your assignment is written as a report to policy makers, so keep your target audience in mind and format the assessment appropriately. This can be written with focus on NSW, interstate, federal and international initiatives where relevant and applicable.Show more
