Overview:
Choose a research article from a peer-reviewed scientific journal that examines the
effectiveness of a nutritional supplement or some aspect of exercise performance in ATHLETES.
The article must be a report of a specific study, NOT one that contains comparisons of multiple studies such as a literature review, systematic review, or meta-analysis)
Instructions:
1.) Pick a research article from a peer-reviewed scientific journal which has been published
within the past 5 years.
TIPS:
I. Use the UTEP library database or other evidenced-based databases to find an article
II. Use the references which have been provided in the textbook
III. Pick a study which contains human subjects and not animals
2.) Write a 1-2-page double-spaced review of the article in MLA format.
I. Describe the function of the nutritional supplement and pathophysiology behind its function or describe the mechanism behind the purposed nutrition on the athlete
Example: Descriiption of how carbohydrate loading may play a role on the athletic performance of a long-distance runner.
II. Describe the purpose, main methods, what major findings of the study were and what the
authors/researchers concluded.
Example: The purpose of the study is to determine if providing athletes with 30 grams of carbohydrate before a race increases endurance during the race.
III. Critique the study by stating the positive/negative of the study and what the limitations are.
Example: The sample size was small therefore making it difficult to determine if the diet approach truly impacts this population.
